  • The restaurant scene in the Philipines is very particular in catering to both the foreign and local community, but while most restaurants claim authenticity on its name, one cannot deny the fact that some have adjusted their dishes to the Filipino palate–but not Nha Em Vietnamese Cuisine in SM Aura, Taguig, City.

    From the vibrant colors to the lanterns and music, Nha Em embodies a true Vietnamese experience

    It was over a year ago since Nha Em Vietnamese Cuisine finally opened its doors to the public and captured the hearts of the local and foreign community because of their authenticity. Not to mention that their executive chef is a Vietnamese, who keeps an eye on their Filipino cooks, the restaurant owner’s mother is also an avid promoter of Vietnamese cuisine in the Philippines.

    While Vietnamese staple food is not a new concept, Nha Em embodies authenticity along with modern and traditional Vietnamese dining experience. 70% of their ingredients are sourced from Vietnam including the all-time favorite Cha Gio or Fried Spring Rolls’ fishnet-like wrappers. The wrappers are sourced from Hoi An in Vietnam and are crispier than the usual spring roll wrappers.

    Unlike Filipino style spring rolls, Vietnamese spring rolls are often eaten by wrapping the rolls with the greens and dipping it into the sweet fish sauce prepared on the side. Inside, you’ll taste minced pork and shrimp along with mushrooms and rice noodles and are better paired with the best bowl of noodle soup—Pho Bo.

    Nha Em’s Pho Bo is served with a plate of greens and a lime that is best added to the simmering bowl of noodle soup.  It is made of beef bones, boiled to get the perfect broth which adds flavor along with the herbs and vegetables sprinkled on top.

    For their mains, you can never go wrong with their large serving of Banh Xeo, a crispy crepe made with Nha Em’s very own homemade batter. The crepe has sauteed bean sprouts, shrimp and pork inside and is served with veggies and herbs along with a special nuoc mam dip!

    One might be surprised at how big Banh Xeo is so we are giving you a few steps on how to eat the Banh Xeo:

    • Lay out your chosen veggies on a separate plate
    • Cut a portion of the Banh Xeo and place it on top of the veggies
    • Top it off with some herbs and finally;
    • Roll the Banh Xeo and the greens and dip into the sauce

    Notice the similarity of the steps to Cha Gio? Don’t be surprised as Vietnamese dishes are often healthy and do involve a lot of veggies, herbs, and spices. While they acknowledge healthy servings as their challenge, Nha Em wants to reach out and teach people on how to appreciate Vietnamese cuisine to a full.

    So for desserts, taste the authentic Vietnamese sweets like the Banh Flan or sweetened custard with a bittersweet finish and Nha Em’s homemade yogurt also called Sua Chua.
