  • Space Encounters Gallery blurs the line between reality and fantasy with its two new exhibits opening this April 24.

With an aim to “promote a community that embraces reciprocity of ideas and art appreciation,” the gallery presents another eye-catching and impactful show, the Night and Day and Sleepwalkers.

Night and Day is a solo show of artist Sherwin C. Tan, which explores the two faces of reality: light and darkness. While it’s easy to dismiss his works as charming and innocent, Tan’s art is not all peachy.

Dark, somber tones deliberately contrast with bright, happy colors in the two series of artworks showcased by Tan. “I am not focused only on the sunny side of life… Darkness is a real part of our journey,” he said.

Tan, who has had a number of solo and group exhibits in the country and abroad, breaks all that tension with a positive perspective—like finding an optimism amid the chaos. “You will see hope in each dark painting that I do,” he added.

Meanwhile, Sleepwalkers delves into the realm between waking and dreaming. The group show features contemporary abstract artists Marlon MagbanuaJosep Pascual, Jayson Muring, and Michael Pastorizo.

    Muring – 403

Magbanua’s works tackle the existential, and asks “the question of where one originates from and how it defines man’s propensity to coexist and connect with those around him on a level beyond physical.”

Pascual – Love of My Life

Pascual plays with the idiosyncrasies of emotions, as Muring pulls inspiration from childhood memories spent in bucolic Marinduque. Meanwhile, Pastorizo journeys into the world of reveries using florals and geometry as symbolism.

    Pastorizo – Dreamer

As varying as these two exhibits may seem, surreal and ethereal elements tie all these artists together. Gallery owners Thor Balanon and Wilmer Lopez sum up what guests can expect: “We’re excited to see Tan’s works interacting with this new crop of abstractionists. We want to create a very dreamlike atmosphere in these shows.”
