  • After the success of Phantom of the Opera, another Andrew Lloyd Webber classic is set to take the stage this coming November. CATS, an Andrew Lloyd Webber musical based on the T.S. Elliot’s Old Possum’s Books of Practical Cats, will open at The Theatre at Solaire this coming November 6, 2019.

The musical follows the story of a tribe of felines called the Jellicle Cats or the Jellicles that gather in their annual Jellicle Ball where the Jellicle Patriarch, Old Deuteronomy will choose a Jellicle who will ascend to the Heaviside Layer, a metaphorical Heaven, and be reborn. The Jellicle Ball commences with a line-up of songs that are based on the poems in the Old Possum’s Book of Practical Cats.

The musical comes to an end with Grizabella: The Glamour Cat being chosen by Old Deuteronomy to ascend to the Heaviside Layer after performing “Memory”, the musical’s most popular song.

While the rest of the cast of the 2019 production has yet to be announced, it is confirmed that Joanna Ampil will be joining the company as Grizabella. The actress is known for her appearances as Maria Von Trapp in The Sound of Music, Kim in Miss Saigon and Candida in the 2017 film Ang Larawan among others.

She has also played the role of Grizabella in the UK-European Tour from 2013-2014 and again at the World Tour from 2017-2018.

CATS first came to Manila in 2010 at the Cultural Center of the Philippines. The Australian touring company that toured Asia and Australia performed in the country along with Ms. Lea Salonga as Grizabella during their limited run.

The musical originally opened at London’s West End in 1981 before its Broadway premiere in 1982. The musical has won awards such as Best Musical at the Laurence Olivier Awards and the Tony Awards. CATS was originally the longest running musical on Broadway from 1997 until 2006 before being surpassed by The Phantom of the Opera. It is currently the fourth longest running show on Broadway and the sixth longest-running show on the West End.

The musical has been performed around the world and has been translated into at least 20 languages including Japanese, Dutch, Polish and Italian among others. It has also sprouted a direct-to-video film in 1998 that starred Elaine Paige as Grizabella. Another film adaptation is set to release at the end of the year that features Jennifer Hudson, James Corden, Idris Elba, and Sir Ian McKellen.
