  • ESGS 2018: Games Are Not Just for Gamers Anymore
  • Happened last October 26 to 28, the E-Sports and Gaming Summit (ESGS) 2018 proved itself to be the biggest gaming convention in the country, showcasing games of all kinds for all ages.

It was attended by over 24,000 people, and had sponsor booths, merchandise, artists, student game developers, and even the Games and Amusement Board of the Philippines.

    Game Testing and Previews

Seasoned gamers, as well as casual players, all enjoy the previews of upcoming games and the newly developed games.

One of the reasons why ESGS is a must-attend for gamers is because it’s an event where major, local, and independent game developers get to introduce their games. It has become a great avenue for both players who are avidly waiting to upgrade their systems, and developers looking for feedback on their products.

Companies selling computers, consoles, gaming systems, and accessories were present at the event to showcase and sell their products at a special event discount.

ASUS releases the ROG Phone in the Philippines. This phone is currently the highest performing Android Phone according to AnTuTu Benchmark and the 2018 Global Market data.

Further, convention attendees got to beta test gaming rigs in development, while players got to try VR treadmills, water-cooled CPUs, and gaming phones for free.

    Free Play and Activities

ACER steps up the VR game with their omnidirectional VR treadmill. Players are suited into the rig and are able to ‘walk’ to maneuver around the VR game.

Games and gaming rigs are not the only things to expect every ESGS. This year, companies took it further and let event attendees participate in activities, and even held raffles for various game items, merchandise, and products.

Barangay 143 booth had carnival games in their booth area as well as free Instagram sticker prints and merchandise.

The event also celebrated the launch of the very first Filipino anime, Barangay 143. Their booth area held games and raffles, including free coffee!

This local anime is currently showing on GMA and also has multiple mobile games. They have been a part of ESGS since last year, where they also announced job openings for animators and back-end developers.

    Game Tournaments and Shoutcasters

With the emergence of mobile games, ESGS held game tournaments for both mobile and PC games such as Mobile Legends and DOTA 2

E-Sports is the highlight of ESGS–and this year, tournaments were held both on the main stage and sponsor booths. Mobile and PC game tournaments happened almost every hour of the three-day event, including the Road to Nationals tournament for Tekken 7 and DOTA 2.

Tournament shoutcasters are those who explain the game to the viewers explaining the ‘why’ and the ‘how’ of every major battle or development is happening in the game.

ESGS also celebrates game shoutcasters who commentate on tournaments and explain the players’ decisions and strategies to the audience. They help the crowd understand the advancements of each team and the progress of the battle.

    E-Sports and Gaming Summit 2019

Competitive gamers brought their own arcade game controllers to battle it out and gain an advantage in the game.

The Electronic Sports and Gaming Summit is an annual event by Gariath Concepts and is supported by the Electronic Sports National Association of the Philippines. Since 2014, the event has brought in international games, while also promoting the local game industry.

By bridging the connection between tech companies, game developers, and gamers, ESGS has become the most awaited gaming event every year. Their continuous growth makes fans, gamers, and developers look forward to ESGS 2019.
