The award, called Best Retirement Area Deemed as Retiree-Friendly (RADAR), is based on criteria set by the United Nations, International Living, World Health Organization, and other international organizations. Factors for judging include the cost of living, friendliness of locals, climate, health care, and peace and order.

PRA marketing head Mervin Magbuhat noted that based on their study, there are over 300 retirees in Negros Island and 255 of which are in Dumaguete. As the first city in the Visayas to be awarded such, Dumaguete is expected to get more attention, visitors, and investors interested in the retirement and tourism industries.

Dumaguete was also previously named by Forbes Magazine in 2014 as one of the Best Places in the World to Retire. As stated in a Philippine Star report, Dumaguete Mayor Felipe Antonio Remollo said, “We need to prepare and make these retirees part of our community. The more we get recognition like this, the more our city government, our city council should work hard.”

Dumaguete is dubbed as “The City of Gentle People” with its laidback atmosphere, walkable land area, and beautiful oceanfront. Without traffic and a low crime rate, the city is really the place to feel truly relaxed whether or not you are a local, expat, or retiree.

The last RADAR award was given six years ago to Makati City. As of June 2018, the Philippines has 56,432 foreign retirees, who are all SRRV holders.
