  • Belgian Fries on the way to get UNESCO World Heritage Recognition
  • Now a national intangible cultural heritage, the Belgian frietkot culture (fry shops) are on the way towards worldwide UNESCO recognition. In 2016, the Philippines received 25,154 tons of frozen fries import from Belgium showing that the original Belgian fries is a crowd favorite!

Belgium is the number one fries export country worldwide as well as the top consumer of fries; no wonder Belgian fry shops have received the label of intangible cultural heritage. The recognition was made official by H.R.H. Prince Laurent of Belgium. With this, Belgian fries exporters seek to increase market share in the Philippines.

Later this year, five major Belgian exporters will be present at theWorld Food Expo Philippines, 0ne of the country’s major food fairs, on August 1-4. It will be their first B2B exhibition in the country to better promote processed potato products. To represent the original Belgian fries, family-owned businesses like Agristo, Bart’s Potato Company, Clarebout Potatoes, Ecofrost, and Mydibel will be in attendance.

Each of the five companies has a wide range of potato products and specialties that are exported to over 100 countries worldwide as well as being halal-certified. Additionally, their participation is part of a promotion campaign co-financed by the European Union known as “Original Belgian Fries. Universally Delicious.” in Southeast Asia. The campaign aims to introduce Belgian fries to Southeast Asian countries like Indonesia, the Philippines, Malaysia, Thailand, and Vietnam.

“This is one of the world’s largest fast growing regions with a rising middle class, rapid urbanization and an overall young population,” says Roman Cools, secretary-general of Belgapom. “Our fries truly differ from those from other destinations.”
