  • The Civil Aviation Authority of the Philippines (CAAP) has issued an order of the temporary suspension of operations at the Legazpi Airport until further notice.

    The notice was issued after the Mayon Volcano erupted on Monday morning and the alert level was raised to Level 4 by the Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (PHIVOLCS). PHIVOLCS has warned the public to be “vigilant and desist from entering the danger zone” which has now been extended to an eight-kilometer radius from the summit vent.

    Lava fountaining at Mayon Volcano reached a height of 500 to 700 meters, and produced a 4-kilometer high ash plume. (Time-series photos were taken from 21:35 to 21:48 PST 22 January 2018 at the Mayon Volcano Observatory, Lignon Hill, Legazpi City, Albay.)

    Two major airlines with flights to Legazpi and other airports in Albay have both announced the cancellation of their flights.

    Philippine Airlines (PAL) cancelled four flights today, January 23:

    – PR 2921 Manila – Legazpi
    – PR 2927 Cebu – Legazpi
    – PR 2965 Clark – Naga
    – PR 2621 Clark – Masbate

    Cebu Pacific Air likewise have cancelled flights bound for Albay:

    – DG 6031 Manila-San Jose
    – DG 6032 San Jose-Manila
    – DG 6073 Manila-Tablas
    – DG 6074 Tablas-Manila
    – DG 6177 Manila-Masbate
    – DG 6178 Masbate-Manila
    – DG 6298 Caticlan-Clark
    – DG 6299 Clark-Caticlan
    – DG 6206 Cebu-Legaspi
    – DG 6204 Cebu-Legaspi
    – DG 6207 Legaspi-Cebu
    – DG 6205 Legaspi-Cebu
    – 5J 323 Manila-Legazpi
    – 5J 325 Manila-Legazpi
    – 5J 327 Manila-Legazpi
    – 5J 324 Legazpi-Manila
    – 5J 326 Legazpi-Manila
    – 5J 328 Legazpi-Manila
    – DG 6111 Manila-Naga
    – DG 6117 Manila-Naga
    – DG 6112 Naga-Manila
    – DG 6118 Naga-Manila

    Civil aviation pilots have also been advised by the CAAP to avoid flying close to Mayon Volcano.
