LTO Secretary Arthur Tugade himself underwent the process and got his own new driver’s license card which, according to him, only took less than ten minutes.
The agency started processing applications for five-year driver’s licenses since October last year but experienced delays with the release of the license cards due to issues with printing. LTO still has a backlog of 3.6 million driver’s license applications which the agency will process in September starting with those in Metro Manila, followed by Central Luzon, CALABARZON, and Davao.
President Rodrigo Duterte signed last August 2 the law extending the validity of driver’s licenses from three years to five years. The law applied to professional and non-professional driver’s licenses, excepting student permits.
Driver’s license holders without any record of violations within the period of five years will also be entitled to a renewal of license with 10-year validity.
