Rizal, Luna, and Amorsolo works to be hightlighted in an annual art auction

It’s that time of the year again for the art lovers and curators to snag something they can add to their collection. The annual Asian Cultural Council Philippines Art Auction will be taking place on February 18 at the Leon Gallery, happening alongside Art Fair Philippines 2017. The said auction will also be a fundraising event for the Asian Cultural Council (ACC) Manila, which supports talented artists from various fields.

This year’s event promises to be bigger than last year’s as there will be 209 works which will be auctioned, compared to about 116-120 works from the previous year.

Jaime Ponce de Leon, director of Leon Gallery, said, in his foreword on the auction’s catalogue, that they are most proud to auction an album containing two of Rizal’s drawings in it. “This is the first time in living memory that any work of art on paper, signed by our National Hero, is ever offered at auction,” De Leon stated. The sketches were said to be drawn by Rizal in the year 1887, when he was in Germany, finishing his classic novel “Noli Me Tangere”.

They will also be putting 3 pieces by Juan Luna up for sale. This includes a painting entitled La Patria en Peligro or The Motherland in Danger which was inspired by Victor Hugo’s “Les Miserables” and the French Revolution, in particular. Aside from the works of Luna and Rizal, the Asian Cultural Council Philippines Art Auction will also be featuring pieces by Carlos “Botong” Francisco and Fernando Amorsolo who were both National Artists for Visual Arts and Painting, respectively.

The auction will be taking place on February 18, 2PM, at the Leon Gallery in Eurovilla 1, Rufino and Legazpi Streets, Legazpi Village, Makati City.
