The 19th Philippine International Hot Air Balloon Festival
The Philippine International Hot Air Balloon Festival (PIHABF) was first organized by former Tourism Secretary Mina Gabor together with some local aviation enthusiasts with one goal in mind: to help jumpstart the local economy and boost the spirit of the Central Luzon region after the devastating 1991 eruption of Mount Pinatubo. Now on its 19th year, the festival, also known as A Weekend of Everything that Flies, was indeed uplifting and more enjoyable than ever.
PIHABF is primarily a gathering of local and international aviators and flying enthusiasts, although spectators are also welcome. And so last February 12-15, people from all over the country and the world flocked to Clark Freeport Zone in Angeles City, Pampanga to witness one of the biggest aviation events in the Philippines.
There were many events everyone was excited to see, but first and foremost was hot air balloon flying. The balloons came in many whimsical patterns, colors and shapes, such as animals, shoes, houses and even one of Vincent van Gogh’s head. Guests were able to ride balloons during the early morning takeoffs. During the night takeoffs, everyone was treated to the beautiful glow of the balloons against the backdrop of the inky evening.
Other fun events included different flight shows and maneuvers by several kinds of flying machines such as gliders, helicopters, turbine jets and even RC UFOs. Flour bombing, skydiving, motorized paragliding, balloon races and other entertaining activities were also demonstrated by the best pilots to thrill the watching crowd.
Spectators also got the chance to fly their own kites while spending time with their families and loved ones. On February 14, Jeepney TV serenaded everyone with a Valentine’s Day concert at the grounds. Overall, it was a lovely weekend – made all the more better by treats high up in the skies.
